There are many superb walks from Keswick suitable for all ages and abilities. Walkers can choose from gentle countryside strolls to full day mountain hiking and many inbetween. Being situated in the Northern Lake District, Keswick is surrounded by some of the most dramatic Lakeland scenes - the Skiddaw range to the North and Borrowdale valley to the South, home to Great Gable, Glaramara and Scafell - this leads to some exciting and breathtaking walks.

Below are a selection of Keswick walks which we find appealing and range from flat paths which are suitable for disabled access, to some slightly harder yet worthwhile Lake District hiking:

Railway Line to Threlkeld
Description of walk: Gentle, flat surface along purpose built path beside (and over!) the river Greta (about 4 miles – one way)
Details: From the door, turn left up Stanger street and then into Fitz park. Head round to the museum, out of the park and up past the swimming pool. Head right following the side of the Keswick hotel and onto the old railway line path (well signposted). Continue along the path which takes you over some of the beautiful old bridges to Threlkeld. Towards the end veer left and upto the A66. Go into the village, stop for a drink at the local pub then get a bus back to Keswick

Round the lake
Description of walk: Easy. Pleasant walk mostly near the lake edge starting and ending in Keswick (8 miles)
Details: Head right onto the Main Street and go towards the mini roundabout. Continue along the road for 100 yards and go over the bridge. Turn immediately left (to the left of Luca’s Italian restaurant) then right on to the path to the village of Portinscale. When past the Derwentwater hotel in Portinscale, veer left passing the shop on your right. Continue along the road for 1/3 mile and then follow signs for Nichol End (turning left). Behind the main Nichol End building is a path which heads slightly uphill towards an imposing looking house. Go up there and continue along the path whch takes you past.

Walla Crag and Ashness Bridge
Description of walk: Medium. Quite short but peaceful walk with spectacular views from the top (7 miles)
Details: Head into the town square and pass the Moot Hall with the building on your right. Go straight up St. Johns Street, past the cinema and continue along Ambleside Road until you get to Springs Road on thr right (just before the steep hill). Turn up Springs Road and continue to the end where you come to Springs Farm. Follow the footpath through the farm and out into the woods. The path continues up and comes to a stile. Now either head right and down through Big Wood or go over the stile and continue to up t the top of the well marked Wall Crag to enjoy amazing views over Newlands, Derwentwater and Keswick.

Stay at the top, go over the wall and follow the path taking you over Falcon's crag and then slowly down to Ashness Bridge. From Ashness drop down the road and either head back to Keswick via the lakeside or get a boat home from the jetty!
